The town of Pomorie is situated on a small peninsula between Nessebar and Burgas. It was founded under the name Anhialo, as a Hellenic colony of Sozopol and is one of the most ancient towns on the Black Sea coast. Anhialo reached its heyday during the Roman period and after the adoption of Christianity it became a bishop’s centre.
It became part of Bulgaria’s territory under Khan Krum. In 917 the prominent battle of Aheloy took place near the town. In it Tsar Simeon succeeded in surrounding and defeating the Byzantine army led by Leo Phocas.
Anhialo played an important role during the Turkish rule, too, but after the Liberation it gradually lost its importance to Bourgas.
The name Pomorie was given to the town in 1934. At present Pomorie is a big tourist centre and one of the biggest balneological resorts in Bulgaria.
The places of interest to visit are the Thracian dome-shaped tomb; the Museum of Salt – the only one on Bulgaria; the Museum of History; the Old Pomorie houses architectural reserve.
